Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

What is facial rejuvenation acupuncture?

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, or cosmetic acupuncture is the treatment of the face and skin aesthetically by inserting very thin, sterile needles into the face and other specific points on the body in order to reestablish harmony and balance. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine have been used for aesthetic purposes for hundreds of years. Facial rejuvenation can provide a safe, natural, non-invasive alternative to cosmetic facial procedures. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture can improve muscle tone on the face and neck. As well as address underlying imbalances that have contributed to the aging process.

The Breakdown

As many of you know, qi is the abundant force that fuels our bodies and us. When we have enough qi, and it flows properly, our bodies function properly and our organs get nourished. This balance leads to a nice healthy glowing complexion. When qi (and blood and other fluids) become deficient or stagnated, the body does not get the nourishment it needs and this contributes to the aging process. As we get older, our qi is less abundant as it was in our youth and this leads to wrinkles, saggy skin, discolorations and other skin problems. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture activates your own body’s qi and fluids to restore it back to a normal balance in order to rectify the wrinkles, sagginess and discolorations.

What problems can facial rejuvenation (cosmetic) acupuncture treat?

This is a question I hear all the time. Most people have no idea the amount of skin issues that facial rejuvenation can help. Some of these are wrinkles on the face, neck and forehead or around the lips, crow’s feet, double chin, saggy skin, eye bags and dark circles around the eyes, facial discolorations and dark spots or age spots and redness. It can treat facial puffiness, dry skin, sallow skin color and acne.

What can you expect during a facial rejuvenation (cosmetic) acupuncture treatment?

I’ve explained this to a number of my patients, but in Chinese medicine, skin problems stem from an array of pathologies or issues going on in your body. Therefore, it is imperative to find the correct diagnosis in order to find the root of the problem and therefore create an effective treatment. I’ll be asking a number of questions in order to find the root of the problem to treat from there. Because of this I will put needles around your body (on your arms and legs), as well as, on your face and neck. You can expect to have at least 10-15 treatments to really notice a major difference and you can also expect to notice differences in other areas as well. Many patients notice an increase in energy, better sleep or decreased stress.

You’ll lie down on the table and after insertion of the needles, you’ll stay there for about 20 minutes to relax and let the needles do the work. After the removal of the needles, I will most likely do some gua sha on your face. Gua sha is the use of a small massage tool to manipulate and stimulate certain points along the face to promote the smooth flow of qi and blood. This usually feels pretty good. Finally, I’ll give food, dietary and/or lifestyle recommendations if necessary to further help the treatment. From there, we will reassess the treatment progress and how you’re feeling each time you come for a session. After the initial 10-15 treatments, I always recommend continuing treatment for maintenance, so that means coming back every couple of weeks for up keep.

What are the results?

Normally, I hear my patients say they start noticing a difference after just one treatment. Like I said, they’ll notice a difference in their energy or sleep and feel more relaxed and less stressed. They start noticing a difference in their skin after a few treatments. However, the results are gradual so I always take a before and after picture. When you look at yourself everyday, it’s really hard to notice a marked difference. I’ve heard feedback saying that, in addition to their initial complaint, they also notice more even skin tone and coloration and a more natural look as opposed to Botox. As if the wrinkles were not fixed, rather they were never really there in the first place.

In fact, a 1996 report in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported that among 300 cases treated with facial acupuncture, 90% had marked effects with one course of treatment.

With maintenance treatments of face acupuncture, facial rejuvenation (cosmetic) acupuncture can have quite long lasting results. Results will continue anywhere from 6 months to 3 years.

So, facial rejuvenation (cosmetic) acupuncture can provide a long lasting, natural, safe and effective approach for delaying the aging process. Right now is the perfect time to start a course of treatment. Summer is right around the corner and that means so many photo ops! We all want to be ready when the camera gets pointed at us, right?
