How Does Acupuncture Work?
“Does acupuncture work?” This is a common question with regards to acupuncture treatments. Most people have no education on how acupuncture works, and this leaves a lack of basic knowledge. It’s completely understandable that our society is just recently seeing acupuncture as a great treatment modality. It is difficult to comprehend something working if you have absolutely no idea how it works. Without familiarity of the scientific base or similar treatments we can relate to, it can lead to some nervousness. This lack of understanding can cause apprehension before and during treatments.
So here’s a brief explanation of how acupuncture works and why “tune ups” are so important.
Your body likes to be at a perfect balance or homeostasis. Frequently, things we do (work, exercise, diet, stress, etc.) cause imbalances in our body. These imbalances can lead to experiencing pain, discomfort, illness and disease. Acupuncture works by rectifying the imbalance in your body, basically helping it heal itself.
How does acupuncture work to accomplish balance?
You have channels or meridians running throughout your body. Located along these channels are acupuncture points. So what we are doing with acupuncture is stimulating your own body’s qi (your energy or life force), blood and other fluids underneath your skin. This stimulation causes these components to circulate smoothly in the correct directions.
Another factor is that acupuncture works cumulatively. After your first treatment, your daily life can cause your body can go back to the unbalanced state. This is why a series of consistently scheduled treatments may be necessary for your body can continue building on the progress. For this reason even after addressing the chief complaint that brought you in, a maintenance phase is often the next plan. A maintenance phase is usually where you come in at least once per month, to keep you in the perfect balance and feeling great!
